The Golf Club at Bridgewater is located on a site that called for all of architect Steve Smyers' years of experience and skill in golf course design. The goal was to build an interesting test of golf that would provide a pleasurable experience for golfers of all skill levels but be particularly challenging for long hitting players. For Smyers, the answer lay in making use of the land in imaginative ways. Bridgewater's location is actually a reclaimed phosphate mine. Though there were a few stands of native oaks, the original terrain was flat -- having few of the topographical features designers usually rely upon to create a course's character. Smyers relied on a risk-reward approach, especially around the greens, to fulfill his design goal.
